Title
National Westminster Bank in Carey Street by Star Yard
Description
A view of the front of the building which is Grade II listed, listing number 1066310. National Westminster Bank at 61 Carey Street, Holborn (also addressed as 95 Chancery Lane, Holborn) by the turning into Star Yard, Holborn (left of the photograph) and looking in the direction of Chancery Lane (right of the image). The four-storey (including basement level) building was designed by F.W. Porter in 1865 for the Union Bank of London in a High Renaissance design. Attached to the wall beside the central entrance to the bank can be seen a National Westminster Bank sign and the bank's name can also be seen above the windows at the Chancery Lane end of the building. A person with an umbrella stands in the entrance. Fronting the building can be seen iron railings with gilded finials surmounting the supports. Cars including two black taxi cabs, a parking meter and two lampposts can also be seen in the street. In Star Yard on the left can be seen part of the five-storey Victorian building with ground floor shop front housing what is likely the business of Ede and Ravenscroft Ltd (tailors and robe makers). The bank eventually closed and in 1999 the building became a J. D. Wetherspoon pub known as The Knights Templar. As of 2021 the business of Ede and Ravenscroft was still trading in Star Yard.
