Interior of Bentley Priory
Description
Interior view of the rotunda at Bentley Priory, The Common, Stanmore. Designed by Sir John Soane in 1788 who also built the entrance hall. Oil painting of Queen Elizabeth II hangs above the fireplace. Various chairs stand around the wall. Writing on the back of photograph has bled through. Bentley Priory was founded in 1170 as an Augustinian monastery. After the dissolution it changed ownership many times; in 1766 its then owner, James Duberly, demolished the original priory and started erecting the current building. It was refurbished and extended in 1788 by architect Sir John Soane in a sumptuous neo-classical style. It has since served as a private residence, hotel, girls’ school, and as administrative and training unit of RAF Fighter and Bomber Command. Since 2013, it is the home of Bentley Priory Museum. It is Grade II* listed.
