View of Bullring Roundabout
Description
View of Bullring Roundabout, Waterloo taken from under the railway viaduct on York Road looking north-east. The Bullring Roundabout was constructed at the confluence of York Road, Waterloo Road, Tenison Way, Stamford Street and Waterloo Bridge. In the mid-1980s the pedestrian underpasses of the Bullring roundabout were home to up to 200 people sleeping rough in cardboard boxes, and became known as Cardboard City. In 1998 Lambeth Council was granted an eviction order and those living there were offered free accommodation. The site was redeveloped as the IMAX Cinema. On the right on the corner of Stamford Street is Waterloo Bridge House built as offices and a post office in 1938 by architects Howard and Souster. Across Stamford Street is the Royal Waterloo Hospital Building founded in 1823. Its name was changed in 1852 to the Royal Infirmary for Children and Women, on receipt of an annual bequest on condition that the hospital admitted inpatients and treated women. The Renaissance style building dates from 1903; of red brick with dressings of terra-cotta and blue and green glazed tiles. Royal Waterloo Hospital Grade II listed no 1356166.
