View of Westminster Bridge Road
Description
View of Westminster Bridge Road, Lambeth, at the junction with Addington Street and looking west toward Westminster Bridge. On the right are four-storey buildings at 218 to 240 Westminster Bridge Road. Numbers 218 and 220 have a sign on the first floor for F. S. MATTA EXPORTER AND DISTRIBUTER OF THE FINEST WINES SPIRITS AND LIQUORS. Number 222 is the COUNTY SNACK BAR with a sign for Coca-Cola. On the side of 228 are posters advertising PEAK FREANS BOURBON BISCUITS and GEORGE JEFFRIES LONDON CAMPAIGN at THE BIG TENT. George Jeffries was a Welsh Evangelist who founded two Pentecostal Churches; the Elim and Bible Pattern Fellowship, preaching throughout the UK until his death in 1962. This is now the site of a modern hotel. Beyond on the right is the South Block of County Hall, built by Higgs and Hill between 1936 and 1939, as an addition to the main County Hall which was opened in 1922 as the headquarters of the London County Council, later the Greater London Council. The Greater London Council was abolished in 1986 and the building is now used for a hotel, restaurants, exhibitions and tourist attractions. On the left by road works is a sign for the contractor FITZPATRICK & SON ROAD AND SEWER CONTRACTOR and piles of pavement slabs. On the side of 191 Westminster Bridge Road is a poster advertising the LUX LOOK (washing powder). A Metropolitan Police ‘Keep Left’ sign is in the road and there are many vehicles including vans, cars and a number 53 Routemaster bus to Camden Town.
