Elizabeth House in York Road
Description
View of the Department of Education and Science in York Road building in York Road, Waterloo, looking north from Chicheley Street. It was built on a vacant site caused by a World War II V1 rocket attack on the 23rd June 1944, which killed three people and injured 48. Known as Elizabeth House, it is an eight-storey office building with retail units on the ground floor designed by architect John Poulson in 1960. There are now plans for redevelopment of this site. A pedestrian footbridge leads over York Road from Waterloo Station through Elizabeth House to the Shell Centre and South Bank. Traffic is stopped at traffic lights at the junction of York Road and Chicheley Street.
