Houses in St Agnes Place
Description
View of front elevations of terraced houses partially fronted by corrugated iron sheeting at St Agnes Place, Kennington. From 1969-2005, St Agnes Place was a squatted street, with squatters taking over properties destined for demolition in plans to expand Kennington Park. Whilst properties pictured are partially demolished, many of the houses remained habitable and residents undertook substantial rebuilding work. The street was run by a housing cooperative which hosted multiple community projects including housing for the homeless, a social centre, music and art studios, and the pirate radio station Rasta FM. The residents included anti-capitalist, environmentalist, and traveller movements. One of the squats was The Rastafari Temple which stood until 2007, approximately a third of St Agnes Place residents were Rastafari. The Jamaican musician Robert Nesta Marley (1945-1981), himself Rastafarian, stayed at St Agnes Place several times in the 1970s.
