Houses in Princes Road
Description
View of 62-63 Princes Road, Lambeth, renamed Black Prince Road in 1936. A two-storey flat-fronted terrace with front gardens enclosed by cast-iron railings. Number 62 has a sign C. F. Newman, Plumber, Zinc and General Metal Worker. In the front garden are drain pipes. The adjoining houses have the windows boarded up and are enclosed by fencing. The tall building to the right is The Beaufort Institute, constructed in 1906 to relocate the Lambeth Ragged School on Newport Road when the land was acquired by the London and Metropolitan Railway Company. Originally founded in 1850 by Henry Beaufoy a distiller, as a memorial to his wife Harriet. The new school was designed as a technical institute for boys by the architect F.A. Powell. The foundation stone was laid on 21st February 1906 by Mildred Beaufoy, wife of Henry Beaufoy. Additional land was acquired in the 1920s and 1930s by the London County Council, and an extension to the main building added when the terraced houses shown were demolished. The Beaufort Institute is Grade II listed, number 1358193 and is now a Buddhist Centre.
