Title
Smith's Pottery in Princes Street
Description
Rear view of Smith's Pottery, 72 Princes Street, Lambeth, from the riverside. Two-storey wooden open structure with a pantiled roof. The men worked largely in the open air, and boys of eleven and twelve years of age were employed. Many men on the upper floor and boys on the lower floor are looking at the camera. Established in 1836 by Thomas Smith, the pottery was a drain pipe and chimney pot manufacturers. In 1879 they moved to the Old Kent Road by the Surrey Canal and grew to be one of the largest stoneware potteries in London. This photograph was taken by architect William Strudwick (1834-1910); photographic storekeeper at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The site is now a hotel on the Albert Embankment.
