Title
St Matthew's Church Hall in Talma Road
Description
St Matthew's Church Hall, Talma Road, Brixton, on the corner of Probert Road. A two-storey building with attics and a tower at the corner with a steeple roof. Two main entrance doors with porches, one on each road. A service door with shutters on the Probert Road side with a telephone box outside. A Jaguar car is on the street with flat tyres and broken windows. The Hall was built in 1889 for the parish of St Matthews, the nearby Grade II* listed church. The architect was Edwin T. Hall and cost £2,200 to build. It was a busy parish; in 1886 the population was 14,000 and it was served by three clergy. This building is now the Brixton Community Base. On the corner three children are playing, and a Lambeth Council road sweeper is walking past with his cart. Next to the hall is number 30 Talma Road; a two-storey terrace with a bay window on the ground floor with decorative plasterwork around the porch and first-floor windows.
