View of Brixton Hill
Description
Looking north-east towards St Matthew's Church, Brixton Hill, Brixton. It is a Grade II* listed building built in 1822-24 to the design of Charles Ferdinand Porden in the Greek revival style, with an octagonal tower on top of a square Doric bell stage; listing number 1080532. The photograph records the scene prior to the widening of Brixton Hill as part of the creation of a one-way system around St Matthew's Church. The widening of Brixton Hill and the re-alignment of St Matthew's Road require the removal of the trees in what had been the rear gardens of 2 and 4 St Matthew's Road, and a man engaged on this task is up a tree with another man standing watch. Smoke indicates how the cuttings are being disposed of. A single-storey structure with a corrugated asbestos roof is devoid of signage - it conceals the entrance to Lambeth Council's nuclear war control centre bunker. A Morris PV van in Civil Defence Corps (Lambeth Division) livery is parked by the building. A flagpole stands outside the building behind the tree contractors' lorry. A trellis fence lines the boundary and pedestrians walk by. Cars are parked opposite and a scooter is in the distance. The bunker was relegated to sub-control centre status in 1966 when the council's new control centre bunker in Upper Norwood was commissioned. After the surface structure had been removed the site was left as a grassed open space. In 2017 the site became the Brixton Orchard.
