Shell Centre under construction in Belvedere Road
Description
View of the construction of the Shell Centre from Belvedere Road, South Bank. The view consists of building frames several storeys high, with cranes positioned on top and along the sides of the building, bringing material up. The 25-storey slab building was designed by Sir Howard Robertson and constructed by Sir Robert McAlpine Ltd between 1958 and 1962. Functioning as the registered address of the Shell Company, the building was known for its luxurious interiors and facilities, including four squash courts, swiming pools, and murals in the auditorium and theatre. The downstream building was demolished in the 1990s.
