Description
Interior second-floor front room at 47 St James's Gardens, Notting Hill, on the southern side of the square. Part of the Norland Estate, this house was built by David Nicholson and Son 1850-51, to the designs of John Barnett for the St James's Square Benefit Building Society Notting Hill, after speculative developer Charles Richardson experienced financial difficulties. Part of a three-storey terrace with basements. Numbers 47-54 are Grade II listed, number 1226538. Boarded chimneypiece and window. The 1851 census shows that annuitants or 'fundholders', living on private incomes were the largest group of householders in the square, most of them women. Most had resident servants.
