Description
Front elevation of 12 Ann's Villas, Notting Hill, from Queensdale Road. On the opposite side of the street is 11-13 St Ann's Villas. St Ann's Villas runs south from St James' Gardens to Royal Crescent. The street was built as part of the Norland Estate laid out by Robert Cantwell. Pairs of three-storey semi-detached houses with basements in Tudor Gothic style. Built in 1852 in red brick with blue diapering, in differing designs. Stone mullioned windows and steps leading up to the porch. Number 12 and 14 are Grade II listed, number 1226516, number 11-13 Grade II listed, number 1226480. In 1861 these were numbers 1 and 23-24. The occupant of number 1 was John Smith a tailor who employed three men, his wife Mary, their three children and a servant. In the 1950s it was the vicarage of St James's Church in nearby St James's Gardens. At number 23 lived Joseph Hill a retired Army Captain his wife Harriet, their son and two servants. Number 24 was occupied by Charles Rusleworth a solicitor, his wife Martha, their son and a servant. In the background is the 1960s built Norland House high-rise residential block.
