View of Flodden Road
Description
View of 20-34 Flodden Road, Camberwell. Originally Brunswick Road, the name was changed as it was in the county of Surrey and the Earl of Surrey led the battle against the Scots at Flodden Field in 1513. Houses on Flodden Road were part of a late-nineteenth century housing development. On the far left, number 20 is a two-storey Venetian Gothic-style detached house with a basement. Ornate stone work decorates the bay window on the ground floor. Numbers 22-24 form a three-storey semi-detached building with attics and basement. Steps lead up to porch decorated with shields and female heads. The ground-floor bay windows are topped with decorative stonework including flowers, swags and a shield. The pediment above the second-floor window has decorative tiles, and a motif of flowers in a vase. A small balustrade sits either side of the window. The gate posts are decorated with a shield and ornate cap stones. There are glazed conservatories to the side of the buildings. Number 26-28 form a three-storey semi-detached building with basement and Queen Anne decoration. Numbers 30-32, on the corner with Calais Street, form an asymmetrical three-storey semi-detached building. Number 32 has a brick tower with a pyramidal piled roof. The buildings remain. On the pavement, in front of numbers 30-32,are parked two motor scooters and two cars are parked in the road.
