View of Foxley Road
Description
View of 1-13 Foxley Road, North Brixton. In 1701 the manor on which these buildings were constructed was let to Sir Stephen Fox, father of the First Baron Holland of Foxley and grandfather of Charles James Fox, noted Whig politician and anti-slavery campaigner. Various members of the family retained the leases until the early-twentieth century. Numbers 1 - 11 form a two-storey terrace with shops on the ground floor, mainly boarded up with corrugated iron. Number 1 has a side extension with a sign for SCRAP METAL WANTED RELIANCE METALS. Number 5 is an old newsagents advertising The News of the World, H. FREEMAN. Number 7 is a cafe with a sign in the window for Pepsi. Numbers 9-11 are combined with a sign above the shop window for what appears to be Monds Cartons Limited. Number 13 has bay windows on the ground and first floor. These buildings have been demolished and replaced with modern housing.
