Rear view of Foxley Road
Description
Rear view of 25-37 Foxley Road, North Brixton. In 1701 the manor on which these buildings were constructed was let to Sir Stephen Fox, father of the First Baron Holland of Foxley and grandfather of Charles James Fox, noted Whig politician and anti-slavery campaigner. Various members of the family retained the leases until the early-twentieth century. A terrace of early to mid-nineteenth century houses with basements, the end and centre houses are four storeys, the others three storeys. Shown after restoration, the rear aspect backs on to an open green space with steps leading up to a back door. The terrace is Grade II listed, number 1185042. The spire of St John the Divine in Vassall Road can be seen in the distance St John's was built in 1870-4 to the designs of George Edmund Street and was considered one of his finest works. It was damaged by bombing during World War II, destroying the lavish interior and stained glass. The church was restored by H. S. Goodhart Rendel and reconsecrated on 27th September 1958.
