Electric Avenue Market
Description
Electric Avenue Market, Brixton, with a view towards the railway bridge. Electric Avenue was opened in 1888 and was the first street market to be lit by electric lighting. Eddy Grant immortalised the street in his 1983 song of the same name. This image shows a busy market with stalls and fresh produce. A woman in leather coat and knee-high boots looks towards the camera whilst she clutches the hand of a child in a hat and plaid coat. Also in view is a woman in headscarf and another in hat and glasses. A lamp post can be seen by the bridge where adverts are posted.
