Houses in Denmark Hill
Description
150-154 Denmark Hill, Lambeth, which has since been demolished for Kings College Hospital. Number 154, a detached villa designed by William Blackburn (a leading prison architect of the Georgian era) and built c1785, was one of the most distinguished houses in the area. It was of stock brick with stone dressings with a three-storeyed centre projecting slightly forward from the two-storeyed wings. A wooden portico-verandah of three bays with Ionic columns on pedestals and stone steps at each end. A decorated moulded entablature had a festoon frieze decoration. A triangular pediment with a mutule cornice and a plain brick tympanum mounted the top. The cast-iron balustrade on the verandah was most likely Victorian. A number of the windows are broken, which suggests a state of dereliction. It was first occupied by Edward Henshaw, a linen draper in Southwark and then by Richard Lawrence, who may be the broker of Throgmorton Street. Number 152 was built c1787-88 and consisted of a central block of three storeys, flanked by narrow wings and a central entrance portico with steps leading up. The first resident was John Christian Schreiber, a wealthy merchant engaged in the Hamburg trade. Number 150 was built c1785-86 as a house of three storeys, raised on a semi-basement with an angular bay projecting from the front. A small tree is by a lamp post on the road-side and another larger tree peeps over the rooftop. A number of cars are in the raised parking area with kerb and pavement in front.
