View of Cons Street
Description
View of Cons Street, Waterloo (formerly Little Windmill Street). Named after Emma Cons a British social reformer, strongly committed to women's suffrage. She also campaigned for educational opportunities for the working class, including cheap tickets to Shakespearean drama at the nearby Old Vic Theatre, which she opened in 1880, later managed by her niece Lilian Baylis. This area suffered substantial bomb damage during World War II. A number of cars are parked in front of a two-storey breeze block building with a sign on the wall: No Parking. Two men are looking in the boot of one of the cars. Behind is the top of a three-storey building with mansard roof and dormer windows, the rear of number 66 The Cut. All these structures except number 66 were demolished and the site is now part of the rebuilt Young Vic Theatre, with number 66 incorporated into the theatre entrance. The large breeze block building to the left within a metal frame, the original Young Vic Theatre built in 1970.
