Interior of building in Palace Green, Kensington Palace Gardens
Description
View of the morning/dining room at 1 Palace Green, Kensington Palace Gardens, Kensington. A large detached house which is Grade II* listed; listing number 1065945. Built by the Arts and Crafts architect Philip Webb in the 1870s. This photograph shows the north wall of the morning/dining room with an elaborate fireplace. It has a triangular pediment with shelf. There is a clock on the shelf in the middle, and vases and other ornaments including a small model of an animal, a hand bell and a pocket watch. The two vases at either end have hand fans propped behind them. Two bells for summoning servants are on the panelling to either side of the fireplace. There is a curved brass fender, fire irons, and a coal scuttle to the left. Two cushions are on the floor which can be used to kneel on while attending to the fire.
The frieze was painted by Edward Burne-Jones and shows scenes from the legend of Cupid and Psyche from the William Morris poem version of the story. Other interior decoration was by the architect Philip Webb and artists from William Morris’s company ‘Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Company’. A William Morris design is on the wall beneath the frieze and below that is wood panelling and the words to the poem. The lettering is barely visible on this photo but can be seen more clearly on image number 85922. Another view of this room can be seen on image number 85920. It was a private house until 1957 when it was divided into flats and unfortunately this decoration was lost. An exterior photo of the building can be seen on image number 85817.
