Description
Rear elevation of 2 Palace Gate, Kensington. Grade II listed; listing number 1065933. It was designed in 1878 by P. C. Hardwick for the Pre-Raphaelite artist Sir John Everett Millais. It has a Blue Plaque commemorating ‘Sir John Everett Millais (1829-1896) Painter, lived and died here’. A grand house with many large windows; the very large north-facing sash window of the artist’s studio is on the first floor on the left. All the other windows are domestic scale from ordinary rooms or corridors, except for the large arched window with the open circular window, which is on the main staircase and interior views of it can be seen on image number 85800, and in the mirror reflection on image number 85798. Now occupied by the Zambian High Commission; in 1969 it was the Pakistan High Commission Annexe. An empty milk bottle sits inside the lowest window on the left, and a white cylindrical water geyser or heater can be seen in the window on the right.
