Title
Houses in Elvaston Place
Description
View of Elvaston Place, South Kensington, looking east from the junction with Gloucester Road. On the left, the ground floor of 35 Gloucester Road had previously been occupied by Dyson & Co, "chymist", but a signboard indicates that the leasehold had been acquired by Hales and Partners. A group of four women stand on the street corner, chatting. Adjacent at 35a Gloucester Road is a small shop with a striped awning advertising curios and china. The five-storey houses in Elvaston Place were built in the 1860s by Charles Aldin on land once forming part of the Harrington estate. Cars line the street, and Queen's Tower, on the campus of Imperial College London, rises in the background.
