Brompton Oratory in Brompton Road
Description
Front elevation of Brompton Oratory on Brompton Road, Kensington. Church in elaborate Italian Baroque style featuring pediments, parapets, balustrades and Doric pillars. Brompton Oratory has an illustrious history. Designed by Herbert Gribble, construction of the church began in 1880 and was completed in 1884. The church's denomination is Roman Catholic; it was consecrated and is still served by the Congregation of the London Oratory founded by Philip Neri (1515-95). Many notable weddings have taken place at Brompton Oratory including the marriages of Stéphane Mallarmé to Marie Gerhard, Edward Elgar to Alice Roberts, and Alfred Hitchcock to Alma Reville. In the Cold War period, the space between the pillars and wall at the front of the Oratory was used as a dead drop for Soviet spies. The church's organ, designed and built by J.W. Walker and Sons Ltd in 1952-54, is considered one of the finest examples of British church organs built in the modern period. The Oratory was Grade II* listed 1969, list entry number: 1358123.
