Description
View of the Prudential Assurance Building, also known as Holborn Bars, 138-142 Holborn, from Greville Street at the junction with Leather Lane. Parked cars. Built on the site of the former Furnival's Inn, Holborn Bars was designed in Gothic Revival style for the Prudential Assurance Society by Alfred Waterhouse, whose other work included the Natural History Museum and Manchester Town Hall, and his son Paul Waterhouse. It was built by Holland, Hannen & Cubitts between 1876 and 1901. The interior design of the main entrance hall was completed in 1906. The building was modified in 1930-32 by with Art Deco features and expanded in 1993. It served as the HQ of the company from 1879-1990s. It was Grade II* listed in 1972.
