Title
Junction of New Church Road and Southampton Way
Description
View of multiple retail premises at the junction of New Church Road and Southampton Way, Camberwell. A partial view of the side elevation of 14 Southampton Way can be seen at the left of the image. Next are two commercial premises of indeterminate purpose. A hoarding from Andrews of 75 Church Street Camberwell advertises that one of the properties is to be sold at auction on 30th June 1938. Next is a newsagent/tobacconist advertising Players Navy Cut cigarettes. Three male pedestrians stand outside. Next is a business of indeterminate purpose with a pram and more pedestrians outside. Dominating the corner of Southampton Way and New Church Road are the premises of T. A. Munford selling soft furnishings, baby linen, haberdashery, hosiery and drapery. The next shop is operated by M. Bevan but its role is unclear and next to this is another newsagent/tobacconist also advertising Players Navy Cut cigarettes. A flatbed four-wheeled wooden cart/trailer (possibly horse drawn) advertising R White and Zesto products is outside the newsagents. A lamppost located outside T. A. Munford supports a street light that extends over the centre of the junction. At the centre right of the image in the background is a partial side elevation of Evelina Mansions. Built and financed by Jewish philanthropists, Evelina Mansions were to provide "...the industrial classes with commodious and healthy Dwellings at a minimum rent". The image has been marked 22.6.38.
