Title
Stagecoach and house in Rye Lane
Description
View of terraced houses on Rye Lane, Peckham. A stagecoach with three horses is stationary on the road and gentlemen with top hats are seated on the top deck. A boy is holding the reins of the lead horse. The stagecoach has the name "Dreadnought" and is operated by Godwin in Camberwell and Peckham Rye and calls at Elephant & Castle and London Bridge railway station. The building behind may have been called “Napier Lodge” or “Napier House” although these names appear to be connected with another building nearby as it is mentioned in court transcripts from 1863 as having a lane nearby: “I am coachman at Napier Lodge, Rye-lane - I know the Heaton Arms and the Little Wonder beer-house - the Heaton Arms is exactly opposite my window…there is a back way to the house on the Rye; you come out by the White Horse” (Napier Lodge is therefore most likely to have been 200-204 Rye Lane on the corner with Sternhall Lane). The most likely location of the building in the picture is 239-241 Rye Lane which has since been demolished and redeveloped.
