On the left, at 85 Elmington Road, is a newsagents shop, possibly called Bateys, with an illuminated sign attached to the corner of the building, an extended awning and advertising Wills's Star cigarettes. On the right corner, at 87 Elmington Road, is G.D.White newsagents & tobacconists with an extended awning and a cast iron street lamp post in the pavement. Advertisements for Woodbines, Nut Brown tobacco and R.Whites Ginger Beer, Lemonade, Cream Soda, Lemon Squash, Kaola and Soda Water. Newspaper posters announce "Guide to Racing Pools To-Night" [The Star], "Royal Visit to France Postponed" and "Schmelings Spine Injuries" (a reference to a boxing match with Joe Louis). At the end of the street on the right, behind a high wall and fence, is Brunswick Park School, which still exists, and opposite that is the hidden entrance to Hampton's Avenue which no longer exists. At the end of the street is the front elevations of 53-57 Picton Street. A car is parked in Elmington Street and the date "24.6.38" has been written on the image. The terrace on the left (west) side of the street was badly damaged during the Blitz and was subsequently demolished to be redeveloped as Dekker House and Cunningham House social housing on the Elmington Estate. The corner shop building on the right has since been demolished and the building behind was redeveloped as Hopewell Yard residential and commercial in the 1980s.
