Description
View of front elevation of detached house at 17 Grove Park, Denmark Hill. The three-storey, much extended brick-built, Victorian building is St. John’s Hostel for Aged Women and was run as a nursing home by an Anglican religious order (Convent of our Lady of Canna) who also lived on site as a religious community. A large front garden with mature bushes is behind a closeboard wooden fence with brick gateposts and wooden gates leading to a tarmac parking area with a parked car covered in tarpaulin. There is a four-storey tower and steps up to main entrance door. Number 17 is connected to Number 18 (off the left of this image) by way of a walkway at first floor level and to the rear is a 1930s mortuary chapel. The building was acquired by Southwark Council in 1975, used as a children's home until the late 1980s and eventually sold to a developer who subdivided it into four separate residential dwellings numbered 17A-17D.
