Grove Hill House in Grove Park
Description
View of Grove Hill House, 8 Grove Park, Denmark Hill. A detached three-storey, stucco house built for physician and philanthropist Dr John Coakley Lettsom by his friend Henry Smith around 1780 with a two-storey bay on either side. Steps up to the front entrance with an open timber Doric tetrastyle porch supported by four columns and with dentil cornice and frieze enriched with paterae and swag over the centre. Arched sash windows on the ground floor and a wooden scaffolding structure is visible. The large rear garden has been sold off and a road to the left leads to garages and a business offering MOT testing as evidenced by the sign on the top of the gatepost and a sign for Agenite batteries in the hedge. A Vauxhall E-Type Wyvern saloon and a small van are parked in the gravel drive to the front of the property. A cast iron street lamp post is visible in the pavement. Grove Hill House was Grade II listed in 1954; List Entry Number: 1385588.
