Title
House in Camberwell Grove
Description
View of house at 38 Camberwell Grove, Southwark. This house is part of the original “Chatham Place” terrace in Camberwell Grove running from numbers 38-60. Built in the early nineteenth century (1830-35), they are Grade II listed (1972 with amendments in 1998), listing number 1378407. On the right of the photo you can see the entrance to Love Walk alley which connects Camberwell Grove with Grove Lane. Number 38 is different from the other houses as it has an attached garage. An advertisement in the South London Observer in June 1851 read “House to Let, situate at 38 Camberwell Grove, large garden with coach house and stable attached. Low rent of £40 per annum. Apply Retzbach, butcher, 28 Camberwell Road, Walworth". Between 1902 and 1918 the resident was a ‘Carman’ and from 1918-25 the space was used as a motor garage. It originally had an arched entrance which was taken away before being restored by new owners in 1980. A metal garbage bin can be seen in front of the house and someone painted “GARAGE PLEASE KEEP…” on the garage door. Since 1973 the house has been renovated with all the sash windows updated to multi-paned versions in keeping with the houses next door all of which date from the early nineteenth-century. The property has also been surrounded by iron railings which were most likely present originally and might have been requisitioned during World War II to provide material for armaments.
