Title
Lime Street Passage and Leadenhall Market
Description
View of Lime Street Passage leading towards Leadenhall Market, City of London. The market takes its name from the lead roof of a mansion that stood on the site in the fourteenth century. Anyone who lived outside London was permitted to sell their poultry here. The house and estate were sold to the Corporation of London in 1411, after which a general market evolved. Horace Jones designed the iron structure that currently houses the market in 1881. A shop with the sign 'Thomas' can be seen on the right and cars line the street on the left-hand side. News billboards are in the foreground, one of which states 'Big West End Store Raid'. Pedestrians mill about the area.
