Description
View of buildings, houses and corner shop at 61-77 Mape Street Bethnal Green, looking north, at the corner of Cheshire Street. Numbers 151-153 leads of to the right in Cheshire Street. Various advertising signs are placed in the shop window for Players Weights cigarettes, Cadbury chocolate, Typhoo tea, and Lyons ice-cream. Five milk bottles are left empty outside the shop. Before becoming a general store this was a beer house named the Anchor and Hope established 1899 as seen by the masonry plaque near roofline run by the Macaire family throughout its life; with James Macaire and then his wife Frances from 1851 to at least 1872; and Henry Macaire in 1891. This whole area is demolished and no longer exists and is a large recreation area named Weavers Fields.
