Description
17-19 Wiseton Road, Battersea, with a Ford Cortina estate and a Ford Transit van (just visible) parked outside. Wiseton Road was developed on land once belonging to Henry McKellar of Wandsworth Lodge, sold on his death in 1863. In the following year, the British Land Company laid out and auctioned small plots on Wiseton Road for house-building, which also brought voting rights, intending to attract artisans and working people. Most of the houses on Wiseton Road were built in the 1860s, but an inscription on the bay front of 19 Wiseton Road indicates that these two houses were (re)built in 1891. Number 17 appears to have been constructed as commercial premises, with a three-bay shopfront and an alley to the left leading to premises at the rear. In 1909, number 17 was one of only three licensed cow sheds in Battersea, becoming the sole one by 1920. At the time of this photograph, the premises were occupied by Putney Art Service Ltd, signwriters. The buildings are still standing.
