Houses in Paradise Street
Description
Looking north-west from the corner with St Marychurch Street at the front elevations of 96-110 Paradise Street (right to left), Bermondsey. Before the street was renumbered in the early 1870s these were 50-57 (left to right). Numbers 98-108 is a terrace of eighteenth century two-storey-plus-basement houses, with attics in mansard rooves except 108 which boasts a full size second floor. The ground floors of numbers 104 and 108 were converted to shops but since World War I both have been only residential. The conversion of number 108 included a bay shop window and a separate door to the shop. The first floor window top sash of Ralph Clifford's former cycle shop at number 110 has blast tape on the glass, but the pane of the lower sash is smashed and a board is positioned behind it. Several of the other houses have broken glass in the windows. A young boy loiters in the arched doorway of number 96. An empty milk bottle awaits collection on number 108's front doorstep. Several of the houses have sandbags against the basement lights to obstruct flood water. The road is paved with brick setts but not beyond the junction. Number 108 was a ruin by the end of World War II and all buildings were cleared for the laying out of King's Stairs Gardens.
