Description
View of front elevation of houses at 146-148 Long Lane, Bermondsey. Used by J. Fogden general providers selling fruit, tea, sugar, butter and margarine. Two prams outside the shop. Joshah Fogden, who ran Spillery's Flour Mill and Bakery also on Long Lane, was apparently the inspiration for Charles Dickens' 1854 novel Hard Times which features Josiah Bounderby - a mill owner in the fictional Coketown. Number 148, built in 1732, is Grade II listed.
