Title
Falcon Wharf in Lombard Road
Description
Front elevation of 32-34 Lombard Road, Wandsworth, looking north-west. Known as Falcon Wharf which was to the rear on the river Thames. The main three-storey brick block was built in 1901 to J.T.Pilditch’s designs as stabling. There were 96 stalls, eight loose boxes and six harness rooms with a ramp leading to a cantilevered inner gallery. The top-storey was used to store fodder and there were also houses for senior staff. The buildings were gradually adapted for lorries and the draw dock was converted to a wet dock for rubbish barges which had previously used Grove Wharf to the north, which was being converted for loading and storing coal. The stable building itself was replaced in 1977 by an office block which was subsequently demolished to make way for a hotel. A sign on the metal gates indicates that the Battersea Borough Council Depot occupies this site. A public weighbridge is just inside the metal gates and a sign on the gates reads "Public weighbridge closed until further notice" with another sign reading "nearest public weighbridge Durham Wharf Lots Road". The symmetrical building has broken windows on the ground floor, a central entrance with double wooden doors and on the third floor there are two loading doors with small cast iron winches. A Ford D series dropside flatbed lorry (registration WML 693G), with T.Mills livery, is parked on the pavement and a smaller Bedford J1 flatbed lorry behind. Two cast iron lamp posts are visible.
