Lombard Dwellings in Lombard Road
Description
Front elevation of 1-5 Lombard Dwellings, Lombard Road, Wandsworth, looking north-west. These were a rare example of working class privately owned tenement buildings. Built under lease from the Birkbeck Building Society in 1886–7 by William Beale. They comprised three tall blocks of two-roomed flats at the southern end of Lombard Road (Nos 53–57), and behind them a range of two-storey dwellings (No. 59) built over stables grouped around a yard, with a first-floor stone balcony or gallery for access. In the background is the side elevation of 57 Lombard Road. These buildings no longer exist.
