Title
Morgan Crucible factory
Description
This view shows three buildings that are part of the extensive Battersea Works of the Morgan Crucible industrial ceramics company. The company acquired the small riverside crucible factory of E. Falke and Sons at Garden Wharf in 1856. By the mid-twentieth century the Battersea Works occupied 1000ft of the Battersea Riverside. This photograph, taken from Battersea Church Road, shows the central Italianate factory building, designed by Charles Henry Cooke and built in 1872, and later factory buildings either side, with a distinctive footbridge connecting them which hides the clock tower of the original works building. Some of the factory windows are broken. The premises are surrounded by a wall and entranceways can be seen from the road. In the foreground is fencing and bollards. Morgan Crucible moved to Swansea between 1969-1972 and the factory buildings were entirely demolished and replaced by the Morgan's Walk housing development (constructed 1984).
