Taken from theÿrear garden, this photograph shows the exterior of this Battersea house covered in ivy, taken prior to its demolition in 1907. Battersea Rise House was built c1770 and was sold c1907, after which it was demolished. It was known as the home of Henry Thornton (1760-1815) and for a time William Wilberforce (1759-1833) both members of the Clapham Sect, an evangelical Anglican group formed to lobby for the abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade who held meetings in the house. Houses at the north end of Muncaster and Canford Roads cover the site of Battersea Rise.
