Title
Derelict terrace, Battersea Church Road
Description
This photograph shows the terrace of three storey nineteenth century properties at 177-181 Battersea Church Road in a state of dereliction, with smashed windows.

A mix of commercial ground floor properties with residential accommodation above, at the date of the photograph nos. 177-179 lack windows, and ground floor commercial premises are boarded up with corrugated iron. Nos. 175-179 were demolished in the late 1970s for the development of the Althorpe Grove estate, designed by Nicholas Wood of the GLC Architecture Department's Housing Branch.

They were replaced by Wood's distinctive terrace of residential properties which include architectural features such as inverted arches under the windows and cast concrete portrait heads on the sides of the buildings. The property at 181, the premises for Defoe Press at the time of the photograph, fared better and was retained, becoming a residential property.
