This view of the library at Battersea Rise House, on Battersea Rise, shows a decorated room, wallpapered, with inset bookcases, decorative cornices and fireplace, furniture including chaires, settee, screen and side table, numerous paintings, bust, decorative objects, rug and harp. Battersea Rise House was built c1770 and was sold c1907, after which it was demolished. It was known as the home of Henry Thornton (1760-1815) and for a time William Wilberforce (1759-1833), both members of the Clapham Sect, an evangelical Anglican group formed to lobby for the abolition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade and who held meetings in the house. Houses at the north end of Muncaster and Canford Roads now cover the site of Battersea Rise.
