Althorpe House, Battersea Church Road, interior
Description
The room is believed to be the ground floor room on the left hand side of the property. Sometimes also described as the Manor House, Althorpe House at 155 Battersea Church Road was situated opposite Saint Mary's church. Internal features dated parts of the house to the seventeenth century, with early eighteenth century chimney pieces and staircase. It was the home of genealogist Arthur Collins, the compiler of "The Peerage of England" until his death in 1760. Between the 1820s and 1850s it was used as a lunatic asylum, occasionally used as a location for the parish's vestry meetings and latterly as the offices for a local dye-works. Damaged by fire, the Greater London Council took the decision to demolish the house in 1965 as preservation was not feasible.
