Title
Hospital in Prince of Wales Drive
Description
Junction with Prince of Wales Drive and Albert Bridge Road showing traffic queuing at traffic lights outside Battersea General Hospital. The hospital was based in a large Italianate residence named Strathdon, built in 1864-1865 by George Todd, which remained empty for many years (to the extent that it became known as "Todd's Folly"). Battersea General Hospital was originally the National Anti-Vivisection Hospital, founded in 1896 by Mrs Theodore Russell Monroe, Secretary of the Anti-Vivisection Society, noted for its refusal to undertake animal experiments or employ physicians linked to animal testing. The hospital opened in 1903 but financial pressure meant it had abandoned its original principles by the 1930s, at which point it became known as Battersea General Hospital (still known as the "anti-viv" to many locals). The hospital was closed in 1972, and the buildings were demolished in 1974. The local health authority disposed of the site in 1987 and a residential care home for Servite Houses was opened in 1991. Opposite the hospital can be seen the gates to the south-western entrance of Battersea Park, where a group of workmen are situated.ÿ
