Title
Interior of Bolingbroke House in Battersea Church Road
Description
Bolingbroke House, Battersea Church Road, Battersea. This shows decorative wood panelling in an interior room. This could be the Cedar Room, a room with a confused history that during the nineteenth century was described as Pope's Study, after the poet Alexander Pope, though the Survey of London suggests there is little evidence to support this claim. Bolingbroke House was the Manor House of Battersea, situated in a plot north-east of the parish church of Saint Mary, with lands that would eventually become Battersea Church Street. The house dated back to the late Elizabethan/early Stuart period but became known as Bolingbroke House by the 1760s as it was associated with its owner, Henry St John, first Viscount Bolingbroke and later members of his family. Much of the house had been demolished by the eighteenth century and only the north wing and stables remained. The house was demolished in 1925. Also visible in the photograph is a small bureau and chair. On the bureau sits photographs, dried flowers, decorative objects and writing materials.
