The Elms in Clapham Common North Side
Description
29 Clapham Common North Side, Battersea. Front elevation of a large four-storey house, The Elms. Steps and railings lead up to the front door. A car is parked in the driveway. The Elms was built in 1754 and became home of banker Robert Barclay until his death in 1816. Sir Charles Barry, architect best known for the Houses of Parliament, lived there from 1853 until his death in 1860, as commemorated by a blue plaque. From 1899 The Elms served as a hospice for the dying, The Hostel of God, run by nuns from the convent of St Margaret's East Grinstead. The neighbouring houses number 30-32 were subsequently purchased to serve as nurses' home. In the 1980s it was renamed Trinity Hospice, which is still operating from its address at 30 Clapham Common North Side and run by the council as an independednt, non-NHS institution. The Elms building is Grade II listed; list entry number 1080495.
