View of Threadneedle Street
Description
View westwards from the junction of Threadneedle Street and Old Broad Street, City of London. In the centre is the curved northeast corner of the Royal Exchange. The Exchange was built in Classical style between 1841 and 1844 by Sir William Tite. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1079134. The elevations in this view are pilastered with shops below including Hamblins. Part of the clock tower on top of the Royal Exchange is visible in the distance. To the right of the photograph is a partial view of the exterior of the Stock Exchange Market (which was built between 1972 and 1975 and adjoined the Stock Exchange Tower). This building is no longer extant having been redeveloped as 60 Threadneedle Street when the Stock Exchange Tower was refurbished in the early 2000s. The building to the left of the photograph is the head office of Eagle Star Insurance Company at 1 Threadneedle Street, here in its brutalist incarnation built between 1964 and 1968. This building is also no longer extant having been rebuilt again between 1988 and 1992 and then occupied by Nationwide since 1992. Various vehicles are visible including an 'Advance Laundry and Cleaning Services' van.
