Bank of England in Threadneedle Street
Description
View of the Pay Hall of the Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, City of London. Also known at various times as the Great Hall and the Issuing Department, this was the area where Bank Of England notes were issued and exchanged. It was built in 1731-1734 by George Sampson, with various additions and revisions by Sir John Soane at the end of the eighteenth century. The eastern end of the hall is dominated by a statue of a figure in Roman dress. In the centre of the room is a large heating stove, alongside which trolleys are parked. A number of elegantly dressed men and women are at the counters, being served by clerks. The hall was demolished prior to the construction of Sir Herbert Baker's new building between 1921 and 1942.
