Title
Bank of England in Threadneedle Street
Description
View of the front courtyard of the Bank of England, Threadneedle Street, City of London. The Bank Of England moved to this site in 1734, and the building with the Corinthian columns on the left of the photo (the Pay Hall) dates to that time. It was designed by George Sampson. The building on the right (the Stock Offices) was added by Sir Robert Taylor from 1765-1770. Further revisions were made by the Bank's Chief Architect - Sir John Soane - from 1788. A number of men are standing in the courtyard and prominent amongst them, in the centre wearing a tall bicorn hat and crimson robe, is John Hogan the Gatekeeper. Most of the bank was demolished and rebuilt between 1921 and 1942, though the two doorways with triangular pediments were incorporated in the new building designed by Sir Herbert Baker.
