Title
Bank of Scotland in Threadneedle Street
Description
A view of the north side of Threadneedle Street from its junction with Bishopsgate Street, City of London. The top of the Stock Exchange Tower is visible in the background. The main subject of the picture is the front façade 37-38 Threadneedle Street. This four-storey building was designed by John Macvicar Anderson in Classical Revival style and built in 1902 as the headquarters of the British Linen Company (which became the British Linen Bank in 1906). The arched entrance to 37 Threadneedle Street with relief above leads to a single-storey lobby and can be seen on the right-hand side of the photograph. A second entrance (number 38) consisting of two Doric columns with arched pediment can be seen further along. The British Linen Bank had been bought by Barclays Bank in 1919 but retained its name. They, in turn, sold it to the Bank of Scotland in 1970. Bank of Scotland branding is visible in the photograph and there is a ‘to let' sign beside the main entrance. This site was originally occupied by South Sea House, the headquarters of the South Sea Company after which it was occupied by the Royal British Bank and then the Baltic Exchange. The building was Grade II listed in 1972; listing number 1358899. The stepped entrance to Lloyds Bank at 39 Threadneedle Street is visible on the left-hand side of the photograph and beyond the Royal Bank of Scotland building is a gated entrance to the forecourt of 40 Threadneedle Street (now part of Adams Court) and the side façade of 41 Threadneedle Street occupied by the National Westminster Bank. A few blurred pedestrians can also be seen.
