Title
The Royal Exchange and Bank of England in Threadneedle Street
Description
View across Bank Junction towards the front façade of the Royal Exchange taken from the steps of Mansion House, City of London. This is a busy street scene with many horse-drawn vehicles and their drivers (omnibuses, hackney carriages and open and closed carts), passengers and pedestrians. The majority of men are wearing either top or bowler hats and two policeman can also be seen. The Royal Exchange is flanked on either side by Threadneedle Street and Cornhill. This its third incarnation (the previous two having been destroyed by fire) and was built in Neo-Classical style to the designs of William Tite in the 1840s when the open plaza of Bank Junction was also created. The western end of the building, as seen in this photograph, consists of a portico of eight Corinthian columns topped by a pediment. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1064713. The equestrian statue in front of the Royal Exchange, dating from 1844, is of the Duke Of Wellington by Chantrey. It was Grade II listed in 1972, listing number 1359168. The corner of the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company at One Cornhill can be seen to the right of the photograph. This company had been formed in 1864 following the merger of the Globe Insurance Company with the Liverpool and London Fire and Life Insurance Company. The building was Grade II listed in 1972; listing number 1286711. The Bank of England, which can be seen to the left of the photograph was, at this time, a three-storey building designed by Sir John Soane between 1788 and 1833. It was almost entirely rebuilt by architect Herbert Baker between 1925 and 1939 becoming a seven-storey building and retaining the original windowless outer wall. It was Grade I listed in 1950; listing number 1079134.
